THE CAROLINA CUP RACES. Saturday, March 28, 2009.

Historic Springdale Race Course in Camden, SC hosts a day of the finest steeplechase racing in America. Thoroughbred horses race along the emerald turf at 35 mph and jump hurdles nearly five feet high. Patrons enjoy the six afternoon races, which includes The Carolina First Carolina Cup. Maiden, novice and seasoned horses vie for glory and over $161,000 in purse money in the six afternoon races, highlighted by the $75,000 Carolina First Carolina Cup. The inaugural race of the first Carolina Cup was run at the historic Springdale Race Course on March 22, 1930. Spectators came from up and down the eastern seaboard from as far away as New York and Canada to Florida for what newspapers would call “the first important jumping race south of Virginia”. The Carolina Cup has become the sporting-social event in South Carolina which has achieved phenomenal success since its inaugural 1930 running. The Carolina Cup has survived innumerable
fashion cycles, countless tailgate menus, and a myriad of ingenuous cocktail concoctions to remain one of South Carolina’s largest sporting social events. The Carolina Cup is a fixture in the history of South Carolina and for the past 76 years, ‘the Cup” has become a Palmetto State tradition with generations of family and friends gathering every year for the official “rites of spring”. Newspaper accounts of the inaugural Carolina
Cup stated that a crowd of about 3,000 spectators attended that first race. Today the Carolina Cup has grown in popularity and attracts over 70,000 racing fans that come year after year for the annual rites of spring for South Carolina. In 2009, we still love to dress in the latest spring fashions, meet with our friends and watch with anticipation as the horses are coming to the finish. This event celebrates another year of traditions for one of South Carolina¹s favorite ‘rites of spring’. Catering to a crowd of over 70,000, the races attract fans of all ages for a day of world class thoroughbred racing over fences. It is the perfect spot for tailgate picnics amid a flurry of spring fashion. A 77 year old South Carolina tradition where fans of all ages mingle in a sea of tailgate parties. From the Corporate Terrace to College Park, all eyes focus on
friends, fashions and steeplechase horse racing.

Admission is $25.00 per person before March 13th, $40.00 thereafter. Children under 12 are admitted free. Corporate packages, reserved parking, grandstand boxes are sold according to availability. Visa/MasterCard credit cards are accepted.
